Suraj Cheema has been a dedicated volunteer at Michael Sobell House since his mother received care there three years ago. Reflecting on his journey, Suraj shared his heartfelt experience, expressing how his time volunteering has been both a way to honour his mother’s memory and a meaningful opportunity to support others going through similar challenges.

Inspired by Michael Sobell Hospice Charity’s support, he began in the Fundraising Department, assisting with data entry, fundraising contacts, and inventory management. Later, he transitioned to the Inpatient Unit, where he worked Saturday shifts, serving meals, cleaning, and helping however needed.

“Volunteering gave me a deeper understanding of how the hospice works, from fundraising to patient care,” Suraj explained. Now a medical student, he credits his hospice experience with teaching him the importance of patient communication and palliative care, encouraging others to volunteer.

“I encourage others to volunteer if they can. I know I have definitely benefited from the experience. Especially if you have a personal connection, it just feels good to give back and be a part of something.”
