Christine, from Berkhamsted, described being unable to move when she was first admitted to The Hospice of St Francis’s Inpatient Unit, which combines home comforts and 24-hour specialist healthcare.

Living with heart problems, Christine was being cared for at home by the Hospice’s Community Team, followed by a stint at Watford Hospital.

Due to issues with fluid retention, Christine recalled being “like the Michelin Man. My legs were double the size. I couldn’t move.”

Christine was on oxygen and intravenous medication, and her legs were leaking and heavily bandaged. After a five-week stay all that changed – “Everyone at the Hospice has a fantastic attitude. They built me back up.”

As part of Christine’s stay on the Inpatient Unit, she was supported by the Physiotherapy Team who help patients to maintain independence, flexibility and reduce pain. “I couldn’t walk. They turned me around.”
