Lister Hospital in Stevenage will have approximately 1,600 patients with dementia admitted each year. With income from the lottery, East and North Hertfordshire Hospitals’ Charity, which supports several hospitals, including Lister Hospital in Stevenage, funds the Forget-Me-Not Dementia Volunteer Service.

This service helps patients with dementia feel more at ease in the unfamiliar hospital environment. Dementia not only causes memory loss and confusion, but it can also affect how you speak, feel and behave. Having to spend time in hospital can be very unsettling for patients living with dementia.

The specially-trained Forget-Me-Not volunteers offer dedicated care, companionship, and support to dementia patients and their loved ones, engaging in enjoyable activities, conversations, and shared moments. Molly Shepherd, Forget-Me- Not Volunteer Coordinator said, “The impact that the Forget-Me-Not volunteers have had is phenomenal. They are dedicated, kind and compassionate and offer a shoulder to cry on, a hand to hold or just a bit of company to alleviate the boredom that comes with being in hospital. They really do make being in hospital that much easier for our patients with dementia.”

Money raised from The Hospice Lottery helps East & North Hertfordshire Hospitals’ Charity fund services like The Forget-Me-Not Dementia Volunteer Service.
