An Aylesbury man who has dedicated his life to helping others has become the latest winner of our £10,000 Rollover prize.
Paul Lander, a casual player who enters the lottery whenever he visits hospice charity shops, purchased his winning ticket in Berkhamsted while browsing for hidden treasures.
It was an ordinary day, much like any other, when Paul and his wife strolled into The Hospice of St Francis charity shop on Berkhamsted’s High Street. Paul’s wife found a lovely pair of trousers, and he picked up a ticket at the till, never expecting that it would change his life in such a delightful way.
Paul has had a rewarding career that began in the police force. After serving his community on the front line, he diversified into publishing, where he created a magazine dedicated to police work—a natural extension of his passion for supporting law enforcement. But his contributions didn’t stop there. In 2019, Paul helped raise over £4 million to build a national memorial to police officers killed in the line of duty by completing 100 triathlons in 100 days.
And, in 2020, during a time when the world needed kindness and generosity more than ever, Paul pivoted to help his local hospice recover from the devastating loss of income caused by the pandemic. He has since fundraised for a number of youth charities and hospices and currently helps out at a Foodbank.
He is now in training for an Ironman triathlon, part of his efforts to raise money for a charity that helps the disabled participate in sport.
When asked about his plans for the £10,000, Paul said “it is a huge relief to receive such a windfall at this time.”
“This will allow me to devote more time to support charities like hospices that are finding it very tough at the moment. They make such an incredible difference to patients and their families. My wife is sure to visit their fabulous shops more often and I will be buying some extra lottery tickets whenever we do,” he added.
This unexpected prize is not just a financial boost; it’s a well-deserved reward for someone who has spent his life giving back to others, and there’s no doubt that it will be put to good use.
For now, though, this former police officer and charity champion is simply enjoying the moment, proof that sometimes, a little bit of luck can come to those who least expect it.
