“I would like to have my final days by the sea”

David, a young man of 47, had a loving partner, Jackie, and a 10-year-old son, Damon. Sadly, he was diagnosed with an aggressive cancer affecting his bones, which eventually impacted his mobility. He was admitted to Michael Sobell Hospice, where we were able to quickly manage his severe pain.

When asked what was most important to him if time was short, David shared his wish to spend his final weeks by the sea in Fishguard, West Wales. This would require a long journey, including transport by stretcher in a private ambulance. After extensive efforts, we successfully secured NHS funding for David’s trip.

David made the six-hour ambulance journey safely and settled into the holiday home with Jackie, Damon, and a surprise addition—a new puppy. Surrounded by the love of his family and supported by the local hospice team, David spent his final weeks in peace, passing away gently a short time later.

The hospice is committed to discovering what truly matters to each individual and making those wishes a reality.
